PSU sailing: Dues and frosh/soph

Hey PSU Sailing,

I've got 2 memos for everyone:

First is that it's the 5th week of the term and dues need to be in to me by friday. I think everyone's paid up, but I want to remind you all to make sure because there's a $25 late fee after this week, and I don't want anyone to get caught by that.

Second is that Frosh/Soph is actually the weekend of Nov 22-23. The NWICSA's google calendar I looked at had incorrect dates and and I just caught the mistake. Sorry for the inconvenience, I hope everyone who was planning on going can still make it, but please let me know soon if you can't.

Thanks everyone, see you at practice.

PSU sailing: JV Regatta Recap and Upcoming Events

Hey Sailors,
Thank you to all who came out this weekend for our JV regatta. I am
extremely proud of the way PSU sailors placed given the amount of
experience and practice that many of you had.

Also I would like to congratulate Julia, Sky, and Kevin on winning
the Vancouver Lake Sailing Club's championships. They sailed a
Lightning - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_(dinghy) and came
in first place every single race through out the day.

Practice this week will be, as always, Wednesday and Friday @ 3:30
rain or shine, wind or glass. For those of you going to Outlaw this
weekend, Friday practice is mandatory.

Frosh~Soph regatta is coming up on November 22 and 23rd. This
regatta is for first and second year college sailors to increase there
skills and knowledge of racing. Working much like the JV regatta we
had this past Saturday, this event is a really good way to become
comfortable on the race course. There will be more teams and boats on
the starting line which will help get you ready for bigger races and
regattas. if you would like to sign up for this, email adam (ajwhitex@gmail.com
)

A few people on the team were also talking about having a small non-
formal regatta the Saturday before Frosh~Soph, which would be November
15th. This would be a small event for PSU sailors and maybe LC as
well. we could setup a course and run races all day at WSC. It would
also give a chance for graduate, post-bac, and part time students to
sail. we could have at least 8 boats available giving 16 people the
chance to race. Would anyone be interested? if you would like to
sign up for this, email adam (ajwhitex@gmail.com)

See you all at practice,
-Tom Miron

PSU sailing: Sloops recap and updates

Hey sailors,
For those you you not with us this last weekend, we had a blast
competing in Sloop Qualifers in Seattle Washington. The race were
sailed in Thistles at CYC Lechie. We raced all day saturday because
of the light winds predicted for sunday. Kendal, Adam and John
sailind the first two race in light wind. Julia, Sky and I competed
in the next six races until it got dark and Sky's bladder almost
burst. I'm very proud of the dedication and work put forth by every
sailor who competed this weekend. With little time to practice and
learn new boats, I feel that everyone gave it there all. Results are
below.

Just a reminder that this is the fourth week of the term and dues are
due next week. Adam will bring down paperwork to practice if you
still need to fill it out.

We will be going to see "Morning Light," Wednesday at 9:55 pm at the
fox tower 10 theater on Park Ave. All are invited and the more the
merrier. I do reccomend buying tickets in advance because of the
limited showing of this movie.

This coming Saturday (10/25) will be the JV Scrimmage series at our
home club, Willamette Sailing Club. This event gives new sailors the
chance to race with their peers and become more comfortable on the
race course. I highly encourage everyone to sign up. this will give
you a chance to increase your knowledge and skill of sailing. Also
it's a one day event right here in portland. We have space for 32
people to participate.

Practice will be Wednesday and Friday at 3:30 pm. Rain or shine/ Wind
or glass.

See you on the Water,
-Tom Miron

PSU sailing: Sailing Movie

Hey Sailors,
Disney recently released a movie in which....

"Fifteen young sailors... six months of intense training... one chance
at the brass ring. This exciting True-Life documentary tells the
inspiring story of a group of intrepid and determined young men and
women, on the cusp of adulthood, as they embark on life's first great
adventure. Racing a high-performance 52-foot sloop in the TRANSPAC,
the most revered of open-ocean sailing competitions, the crew of
"Morning Light" matches wits and skills in a dramatic 2300 mile
showdown against top professionals. From their earliest training
sessions in Hawaii conducted by world-class teachers through their
test of endurance on the high seas, they form an unbreakable bond in
the process of becoming a singular team that is greater than the sum
of its parts. "

PSU sailing: Upcoming Regattas

Hey PSU Sailing,

Hope everyone's term is going well so far. I'm working on the travel forms for the next few regattas, and I'd like to know who wants to go. Here's who I have so far:

Outlaw (Nov 1st):
Josh
Sky
Julia
Tom
John H.
Alieta

Frosh/Soph (Nov 15th):
Sky
Shannon
Graham
Jordan
Tom
Julia
John H.
Alieta
Florence

If you would like to cancel, or if anyone else from the team wants to be added to these lists, please let me know soon. It's not too late to make changes, but we are approaching the two week deadline for Outlaw. I really encourage all team members who are available to go to these regattas. Both are always a lot of fun, and good opportunities for beginners to get more comfortable with racing. Frosh/Soph is for newer skippers only and has coaches on the water giving advice during races, so it's a great learning experience.

Thanks, see you on the water.
-Adam
