PSU sailing: Party in the park

Hey PSU Sailing,

Just a friendly reminder that Party in the Park is coming up this Thursday from 10am until 3pm, and we need members from the team to volunteer to help out at this event. For those of you who are new to the team, party in the park is a recruiting event where all the student organizations set up tables in the park blocks to promote their clubs. PSU sailing has a proud tradition of bringing an FJ and rigging it up on the trailer to show the student body exatcly what we're all about. We need team members to stand with the boat and hand out flyers advertising our website and promoting our upcoming open house, which will be saturday october 11th.

We would like people to voulnteer their time in blocks, here is our current schedule:

9-9:30am: Adam, Julia, Tom
9:20-10am:?
10-11am:?
11-12pm:?
12-1pm: Adam
1-2pm: Adam
2-3pm: Adam, Julia, Sky
Take down: Adam, Julia

It's best to have at least two people at the boat at all times, so let us know your schedules and when you can help out. Thanks!

-Adam and Tom

PSU sailing: practice wednesday and this coming weekend

Hey PSU Sailing,

I'm sorry to say this, but I've fallen victim to the forces of procrastination and dropped the ball on the vehicle requests for this weekend. However, we can still go to north/north this weekend because UW has agreed to charter two FJs for us. Julia is willing to drive her car which can seat 4 people, so we need another driver or two to get up to a total of eight seats. It's too late to get the mileage reimbursed by the school, but we will all chip in for gas for whoever drives their car.

I really am sorry for not turning in the travel forms in on time, but in my defence I've been waiting to turn in these forms because our team is having issues with people wanting to back out or sign up for regattas at the last minute. Campus rec requires a minimum of two weeks advance notice to approve travel plans and rent vehicles. Adding or subtracting people and rental cars after the paperwork has been submitted is a big hassle, especially for the campus rec staff, and it usually costs us a lot of extra money.

This wednesday practice is going to be mandatory for all members of the team so we can have a team meeting and discuss ways to be more organized about our travel plans. The main issue is committing to regattas ahead of time. I understand we're all busy with school, work, and other things, but it would be beneficial to everyone if we could plan out who goes to what regatta at the begininning of each term. Feel free to bring up any suggestions you have for travel plans at the meeting, I'd like everyone's input before we make any deciscions.

Thanks for being patient, I hope you're all enjoying your new classes. See you on the water,

-Adam

So to Josh, Sky, Florence, Shannon, Will, John, Julia, Jordan, Dylan, Kendal, and Graham, thanks for coming to WSC, your help was well appreciated.

PSU sailing: Cougar Cup Recap & Practice this week

Hey Sailors,
Thank you to everyone who went with us to Vantage this past weekend.
The wind was absolutely crazy all weekend and we were only able to get
3 races off on saturday. However, that didn't stop us from having a
good time. John was brave and didn't cry once through multiple
capsizes, laceration to the face, and numerous wood gathering treks.
Will stood his ground and sailed at his first regatta taking home the
Wisest Wizard award. Justin serenaded a few people with his rhythmic
jams while Sky protected us with his wushu long fist.

I would like to give a big thanks to Kyle Eaton and Scott Wilson for
doing Race Committee and helping right all of the capsized boats as
well as saving some off the rocks.

We will be practicing at 3:30 on Wednesday and Friday. All are
welcome and the more the merrier.

Don't forget to mark your calendars for Saturday's work party. We
will be painting the dock box as well as building and restore a couple
berths. This shouldn't take too long if there is a good amount of
people there. If we finish early enough and there is good wind we
will go out sailing. This is a mandatory event for all members and
people planning on being members this year. When we all pitch in a
help out on these days, it helps keep our dues lower. Also there will
be a party Saturday night our (Tom, Adam, & Julia's) new house.

The next regatta will be North/North in Seattle Washington on the
weekend of October 4th and 5th. Please mark your calendars and let me
know if you plan on going as soon as possible.

As always, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to email or
call. See you all on the water wednesday.

PSU sailing: Dock box work party

Hey sailors,

As you all know, we have a regatta coming up this weekend in Vantage, Washington. The following weekend there will be no regatta, so we will be having a work party to complete the dock box. The roof needs to be primed, and then the exterior needs to be painted. We all know how much it rains here in the fall, so it's crucial that we finish painting the dock box asap. This is a mandatory work party for all members of the sailing team, so plan on being at WSC saturday the 27th, at 10 am, until around 4 pm. If there's good breeze then we'll rig up and go sailing after our work is done, we might also have a small get together at the new sailing house later in the evening.

Once again this is a manditory work party, if for some reason you cannot make it let me know as soon as possible. See you at practice.

-Adam

PSU sailing: a couple updates

Hey Sailors,
I have a few updates for you.  If you're going to Cougar Cup this is a must!!!  If you're not but planning on going to any regattas this year it is a really good idea to do now before you forget.  Every sailor needs to register on www.collegesailing.org
1. Go to http://www.collegesailing.org
2. click "Individual Directory" on the left hand side
3. click "register now"
4. fill it out

When you get down to the the "eligibility records" section please be very careful.  The college sailing system is setup on the semester system.  This translates to us as fall term being "fall semester," and winter and spring term  being "spring semester."  The tricky part is that each undergrad is only eligible to sail for 8 semesters or 4 years.  So, please don't register for terms you haven't or don't plan on sailing.  The terms sailed don't have to be consecutive either.  For example, I went to school part time my sophomore year so i was not eligible to sail.  I only registered for my freshman, junior, and now senior year.  If end up in school for 5 years, i still have another year of eligibility left.

If you are a returning sailor, you will need to log in the same way and update your info after finding your name in the directory.

I have updated to calendar at Sailing.groups.pdx.edu with all the regattas and practices until winter break.  please take a look and mark them on your personal calendars.

See you all on the water Friday @
2pm for people going to cougar cup
3:30 for people just coming out to practice

Tom;

Thanks for sending this out.

What will we need to bring for next weekend? I know you mentioned that you're getting tents, but what sort of facilities will be available in the area? Will there be places to eat and/or shower?  Are there any towns in the vicinity?

Regards,
Will

Hey Sailors,
I've had a couple questions about practice this week and Cougar cup
next weekend, 19th - 21st, so I thought i would clear up any
confusion.  We will be practicing only on friday this week.  We
usually start practice at 3:30, however we have a lot to do this
friday before we can leave.  I would like everyone planning on going
to the regatta to be at practice @ 2 pm so that we can load up boats
and get ready to go.  This will give us enough time to practice a bit
before heading out.  If you absolutely can't make it at 2, please
contact me.  Also please come to practice with all of your gear and
everything you need for the weekend, as there will not be time to go
home after practice to grab your stuff.

If you are interested in coming to practice, but aren't planning on
going with us over the weekend, please come to the club at 3:30.  The
more people on the water, the more prepared we will be for the coming
race.

Here is a list of the people I have going:
1. Tom
2. Adam
3. Josh
4. Justin
5. Sky
6. Jordan
7. Will
8. John
9. Katya
10. Zach (maybe)

The absolute drop dead time for backing out is tomorrow (monday) at 3
pm.  I must turn in the paperwork by then.  If you back out after that
we won't have enough people to fill two boats. There will be a
penalty, such as not being able to attend a regatta in the future.
sorry to be so harsh, but we have had problems with people canceling
last minute.

Sorry for the long winded email, but I have one more thing.  A small
amount of work needs to be done at the club that involves moving some
wood.  It would probably take 3 people less than 20 minutes to
complete.  The club needs us to do it as soon as possible because they
are having a fire inspector come down and it doesn't conform to the
fire code.  If two other people are free to help me this week it would
be much appreciated.  I am free tomorrow, monday, as well as
wednesday.  let me know what works for you and we can arrange to meet
down at the club.  Thank you.  As always, don't hesitate to email or
call with any questions,

PSU sailing: Cougar Cup

Hey Sailors,
With school and sailing right around the corner it's time to get back
on the water. We will be having our first fall practice tomorrow at
3:30 down at WSC.

Next weekend (9/19-2/21) is our first regatta, Cougar Cup! it's hosted
by WSU in Vantage Washington on the Columbia River. We will be
leaving on friday the 19th after practice at 3:30 and returning late
Sunday night. Any and all are welcome, but I need to know if you are
planning on going ASAP! Please plan on attending practice tomorrow if
you would like to go to Cougar Cup. This regatta is open to all skill
levels.

If you are new and wanting to join the team, this is a great
opportunity to find out what we are all about. Unfortunately since
this is NWICSA sanctioned event only undergraduate students are
allowed to race.
