RE: PSU sailing: Team racing rules
organizing the PSU team for a summer in 2002, a PSU grad, and now in St.
Thomas. I coached a high school team in team racing here. We went to
nationals every year I coached and won in 2006.
Anyway, I have a lot of experience with rules if you have any questions I'd
be happy to help out.
I'd just amend Bill's remark a bit, in that the rule only applies to the
mark rounding, being rule 18. If the inside boat goes outside the circle
the outside boat can do some things which will require her to make proper
course (of course this should have been done before entering the circle in
the first place...). Generally, however, the inside boat is going to simply
slow down inside the circle, rather than sailing outside of it, making the
outside boat's rounding as slow as possible.
Also, the way overlap is established is an important part of many team
racing rule interpretations...whether from astern, or "instantaneous", so be
aware of the overlap when talking about rules.
Good luck,
Rob Upson

Re: our discussion yesterday about team racing rules, check out this link:
http://www.sailing.org/tools/documents/Appendices%20D%20-%20G-[451].pdf.
There are several changes to the regular racing rules, including the
deletion of rule 18.4, the requirement for an inside, overlapped,
right-of-way boat to gybe a a mark if that is the proper course. So, Tom was
right; a leeward, overlapped boat does not have to gybe at the mark and can
take the windward boat all the way to Figi if he wants.
Suggest you all spend some time studying these rules and we can discuss (and
hopefully practice) them on Friday.
Bill
