PSU sailing: Gorge Invite etc.

Hey Team,

Finally summer came around for the Gorge Invite hosted by PSU, and the last collegiate regatta of the season.  Saturday started out with little to no wind but by afternoon it filled in to a consistent 10-13 knots and we were able to get off 4 races in each division before we ran out of water and sunscreen.  After racing James Acton ('07 graduate) and sidekick Tucker X put on an amazing Southern barbeque which caused several people to put off graduation until after next year's event.  Following dinner awards were presented to the NW All-American Sailing Team.  Congratulations to all who were selected including our very own, Captain Stevi Driver, we salute you!

Sunday began with plenty of wind in the 13-18 knot range; well short of what the Gorge can dish out but absolutely perfect sailing weather.  There were plenty of great wipe-outs and very close races.  I must point out the excellent sailing and seamanship of Adam who not only handled the weather but kept his boat upright and singlehandedly rescued his crew after he fell out when the hiking strap broke.  Also Julia and Katia who have a combined dry weight of 104 pounds, but handled the boat like prose; charging the line like a mastercard.  And of course Tyler who took a boom to the face and kept on sailing.  Don't worry Tyler fans he is still pretty but now with a cool scar.

Thanks to Kyle Eaton for once again postponing his life so that we can have a top-notch PRO and also thanks to the CGRA for rounding out the race committee and providing buoys, boats and fuel.

It was a great year of college sailing and I want to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication. Without everyone on the team it would not be possible to accomplish as much as we did.  From last August until now I have seen the skill and confidence of every sailor grow along with lower scores.  Next year is going to be great; and though I am against animal cruelty I won't promise that any huskies, beavers, ducks, cougars etc will not be harmed.  And finally, thank you to Bill Symes for another year of great coaching; you are in my head every time I move the tiller.

I hope that everyone will find some time to sail and try a few club races over the summer; we should have a schedule out soon.  We will continue to sail until the end of the school year on our Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule and would like to have a Saturday sail with the new people soon.  Enough for now I will see you all on the water.

PSU sailing: It's a great time to start sailing!

Hey Sailors and Future Sailors,
Welcome to everyone who signed up today for the Sailing email list.
I encourage all the new people and people who haven't stopped by the
club to check out our website at:

www.Sailing.groups.pdx.edu

You can
find pretty much any info you need there. This weekend is our final
collegiate regatta (fancy word for a boat race) for the year but we
will be doing plenty of sailing and racing over the summer. Here is
the basics:

Club Sailing -
To be part of club sailing you must be a PSU Student (undergrad or
graduate), faculty, or staff member. DOn't worry if you are not
because we will be offering sailing lessons over the summer for a
nominal fee. To join the club, just come to practice (driving/ bus
directions on the website) monday, wednesday, or friday around 3:30.
We will be down in the clubhouse on the docks, just go down the ramp
and you should see it. There is also a couple high school teams that
practice at the same time, so ask for PSU Sailing. No experience is
necessary.

Racing Team -
To be come part of the racing team you must be a undergraduate
enrolled in at least 12 credits. This is a Inter Collegiate Sailing
Association rule so we must follow it. We travel a few weekends a
month during the school year to race other schools. To join the
racing team stop by the club during our practice times. No experience
is necessary.

If anyone wants to see some college racing, go to a BBQ, and hangout
with sailors, we will be hosting a regatta this weekend at Cascade
Locks in the Gorge, one of the best places to sail in the world. we
will be sailing saturday from 9 to around 5, followed by a BBQ and
social event and camping over night. sunday we will race from 9:30 to
3. let me know if you plan on coming out and i'll give you
directions. it's only about a 45 minute drive.

We hope to have an open house in the coming weeks for new people to
check it out but we are still in the planning process. Don't let that
stop you from coming down to club in the mean time, it's the perfect
time to start sailing!

PSU sailing: Victoria Recap

Hey Sailors,
We had a great time in Victoria BC this past weekend. Two teams/ 10
people drove up to Vancouver, BC Friday night and we took the ferry
over to Victoria on Saturday morning. We had an interesting time with
customs since two people (who shall remain unnamed) in one of the cars
forgot their passports, and they other car accidentally went back in
the US after crossing the border and ended up having to go through
customs three times to enter. Once in Victoria we had a wonderful
time. Saturday we had very light wind and overcast skies but managed
to get 4 races off in both divisions. That night Uvic rented out a
nightclub and put on an amazing event. Sunday races were great with
wind in the upper twenty knots. Several boats capsized repeatedly and
on boat was even demasted. Our varsity team placed 8th and JV placed
10th out of 13 teams. I'm very proud of our JV sailors for holding
their own and beating both Uvic Teams and Wsu. I'd like to thank Uvic
for being so hospitable and putting on an amazing regatta, we'll
defiantly be going back next year. I'd also like to thanks Tyler's
parents for letting us take over their house on mother's day and
providing us with some much needed food.

Next weekend is the PSU Gorge Invite at Cascade Locks. We'll be
hosting the final collegiate regatta of the year, so you know it's
going to be a good on. If you would like to come let me, Josh, or
Stevi know asap, the more the merrier. If you have any questions
please let me know. Hope to see you all Wednesday, and Friday at
practice around 3:15.

-Tom

PSU sailing: Fwd: [NWICSA] NWICSA Team Race Championship Results

Hi everyone!

PSU did a great job this past weekend at team race champs and learned a lot about racing rules and got in some quality practice time.   I am trying to get tabs on who is going to UVIC and Gorge invite. (uvic-may10-11) (invite-may 17-18) We can bring an infinite amount of people to gorge invite (its only 45 minutes away!)  The more people that come, the better!   Also, if anyone has interest in laser competitions (great regatta for it).  Anyways, come out to practice this week, it seems like the fair weather is rolling in.  We have it mon-wed this week at 3, and mon-wed- fri next week at 3, at WSC.  Directions on our website if ya haven't made it down yet.
http://sailing.groups.pdx.edu/

Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.

RE: PSU sailing: Team racing rules

Hi there. Yes, I'm still on this mailing list after 5 years. I was
organizing the PSU team for a summer in 2002, a PSU grad, and now in St.
Thomas. I coached a high school team in team racing here. We went to
nationals every year I coached and won in 2006.

Anyway, I have a lot of experience with rules if you have any questions I'd
be happy to help out.

I'd just amend Bill's remark a bit, in that the rule only applies to the
mark rounding, being rule 18. If the inside boat goes outside the circle
the outside boat can do some things which will require her to make proper
course (of course this should have been done before entering the circle in
the first place...). Generally, however, the inside boat is going to simply
slow down inside the circle, rather than sailing outside of it, making the
outside boat's rounding as slow as possible.

Also, the way overlap is established is an important part of many team
racing rule interpretations...whether from astern, or "instantaneous", so be
aware of the overlap when talking about rules.

Good luck,
Rob Upson

Re: our discussion yesterday about team racing rules, check out this link:
http://www.sailing.org/tools/documents/Appendices%20D%20-%20G-[451].pdf.
There are several changes to the regular racing rules, including the
deletion of rule 18.4, the requirement for an inside, overlapped,
right-of-way boat to gybe a a mark if that is the proper course. So, Tom was
right; a leeward, overlapped boat does not have to gybe at the mark and can
take the windward boat all the way to Figi if he wants.

Suggest you all spend some time studying these rules and we can discuss (and
hopefully practice) them on Friday.

Bill
